"Well done, mom." That’s what came to mind a few days ago when my mom’s race on this earth came to an end. From the stories I’ve heard, my mom knew from an early age that she had a part to play in this world, a special gifting and calling from God to love, care for, and lead those around her.
When she was young, this meant teaching Sunday school and caring for the vulnerable around her; and when she got older, it never really changed. Her passion was to help others and create strength where it was lacking by offering her wisdom and confidence in who God is, how he works, and where he meets us on the road of life. She always seemed to know what needed doing, whether she was right or not, she always seemed sure 😊 and this where I often miss her most.
She was my google, or wikihow, she could always give me next steps for whatever I was facing. I didn’t have to worry about not knowing something because I felt like I had someone who would know. The other thing I’ll miss, and it’s been probably 10 years or more already, is finding her hard at work sitting in her bed and coming to rest beside her. Having her pet my head or ask me about my life. These moments of togetherness were home to me.
I like this picture because I loved to make her laugh, especially at times when being silly was bordering on inappropriate. She would tell me often about the great things she saw in me and how God had a special part also for me to play in the world. My response was usually something silly, like how I can’t get to that cause I’m too busy not taking anything seriously. She would then roll her eyes and suggest I was destined to be president or a poor stand up comedian. And I never cared what I became, it’s always been enough just to make her laugh.
My mom helped me, and so many others find a part to play in God’s big story--to bring laughter, joy, love, wisdom, strength, hope, and confidence (bordering on arrogance from time to time 😉). She played her part well. Well done, mom ❤️. - Michael St. Denis
